In December 2007, France adopted the principle of the ecological no-claims bonus/malus, in other words the éco-pastille car. This system of premium and surtax was set up to encourage the purchasers of new cars to rather choose “clean” vehicles than of the vehicles “pollutants”. The limit between the no-claims bonus and the malus is marked by a neutral zone located between 130 and 160 G CO2/km, representing the great majority of the current vehicles. In lower part of this neutral zone, the premiums (no-claims bonus) are established between 200 € and 1000 €. In top of the neutral zone, the surtaxes (malus) spread out between 200 € and 2600 €. A superbonus of 300 € is granted to the purchase of a clean vehicle accompanied by a reject of an old vehicle of more than 15 years.
